The History of G.A.L.A.
G.A.L.A. began like many other grassroots organizations - a few people getting together around food and drink to discuss ways they can create the change they want to see in the world.
The first G.A.L.A. potluck convened one winter Sunday night in January of 2006. The evening was filled with talk about ways to, "think globally and act locally." A deep concern for future generations and dissatisfaction with the status quo seemed to be common threads amongst this loosely linked group of individuals. This initial potluck was such a success (and so delicious!) that the group decided to continue meeting on a regular basis, and thus, G.A.L.A. was born.
Currently, G.A.L.A. is a 100% volunteer-based organization made up of teachers, farmers, business-owners, youth, senior-citizens, parents, students and other folks from many walks of life. GALA is the community it seeks to serve. Our interests range from environmental stewardship to human rights, from participatory democracy to holistic healing practices, to living and promoting peace. Together, we strive to live by Gandhi's words, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Although G.A.L.A. is still in its infant stage as an organization, it is exciting to think how far we have come since that first potluck. Everyone is encouraged to get involved in these early stages to help make sure G.A.L.A. develops in a manner that reflects the priorities, concerns, and desires of the broader community. Remember, the "history" of G.A.L.A. is really yours to write!
