Global Awareness Local Action (G.A.L.A.) -
In a nutshell!

G.A.L.A.'s goal is nothing short of global sustainability. In a nutshell, our plan to achieve this bold initiative is by celebrating sustainable solutions one community at a time. Starting in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, off the eastern shores o Lake Winnepesaukee, we are developing a local-action model to help communities move toward sustainability.

Today, our model consists of two main programs – one focused on community service and education, and the other on advocacy. Respectively, these programs are -

Sustainability in Action: Building social capital while restoring ecological integrity

Sustainability Three-Pillar Project: Strengthening relationships between society, economy, and ecology.

Sustainability in Action is G.A.L.A.'s education and community-service program. This program includes our film/documentary screenings, study circles, theme-potlucks, homesteading workshops, farmers' market, community garden project, localvore challenge, and freecycle, as well as community events like Raise a Rope for Climate Hope. Each project helps build social capital by providing the venue and opportunity for community collaboration and trust-building. Each project also restores ecological integrity by incorporating ways to reduce environmental impact into each community celebratory activity.

Sustainability Three-Pillar Project is G.A.L.A.'s advocacy program. Our advocacy program is premised on the fact that global sustainability will not be achieved unless we shift our prevailing political and economic policies to promote social justice and environmental sustainability. So far, this program includes our Town Master Plan Sustainability Initiative and Buy Wisely Locally Guide. The Town Master Plan Sustainability Initiative works with the Wolfeboro Planning Board to identify sustainability indicators, research baseline data, establish benchmarks, set goals with timetables, and implement policy to achieve these goals. The Buy Wisely Locally Guide helps businesses and consumers shift, respectively, their procurement policies and purchasing decisions to have a more positive impact and people and the planet.
